A combination approach in which a penetrating lubricant is used to saturate the core, followed with a coating to seal and protect the outer surface, is recommended. Wire rope lubricants can be petrolatum, asphaltic, grease, petroleum oils or vegetable oil-based (Figure 3).
Furthermore, how do you lubricate a wired crane rope?
To keep this type of wear minimal, you will need to apply some type of penetrating lubricant to the exterior of the rope and allow it to soak deep into the strands. Penetrating lubricants are lightweight and usually consist of petroleum-based or vegetable-based oils.
Right, what type of wire rope is used on cranes? Python® Compac 18 wire ropes are more resistant to the effects of drum crushing than 19x7 due to the compacted strands and smoothness of the rope surface. With 18 strands of 19 wires in all sizes, Python ® Compac 18 remains extremely exible and easy to handle.
Besides this, what can I use to lubricate bike cables?
Should you oil a winch cable?
No Lubrication is required for the life of the winch, unless the winch is submerged in water. If this occurs, a qualified service center must complete service as soon as possible to prevent corrosion damage.

LUBE-A-Rope Aerosol - 15oz Can
This product protects equipment against dust, dirt and water migration that often increase friction and lead to failures.
LUBE-A-ROPE Chain and Cable Lubricant will not fly off - it clings on and keeps working long after the initial application. It eliminates that cause of corrosion by forcing water out of assemblies.
This product penetrates and acts as a corrosion inhibitor to provide long-lasting protection against saltwater immersion and atmospheric moisture.
One of the better ways, and if truth be told, the only way, a wire rope can be maintained is through regular lubrication. When buying a wire rope, one must ensure that it is properly lubricated. A well lubricated wire rope has a longer useful life than a rope that has problems with its lubrication.
For cable lifts, use a marine-grade grease to lubricate bearings and pulleys. This task should be done every six months or so. Motors and their parts should be oiled using an anti-corrosion lubricant at least twice a year, depending on use. Cables should be sprayed lubricated every so often.
6X19 & 6X36 Class Ropes The 6X19 & 6X36 classification of wire ropes is good for fatigue resistance and to withstand abrasion or crushing on the drum. 6 x 19S (Seale) -This is a good rope to withstand abrasion or crushing on the drum but its fatigue resistance is decreased.
For example, “7x19” means the rope has seven (7) strands, with 19 wires in each strand. 7x19 is the most flexible aircraft cable construction. 7x19 is approximately twice as flexible as 7x7 construction. Aircraft cable is rated by its nominal break strength.
Some will think that any old lubricant will do, and that can't be any farther from the truth. Some cables have a slick inner sheath that will gum up if exposed to solvents or harsh chemicals, so do NOT use WD-40 or any other type of penetrating oil.
WD40 is only suitable for cleaning the internal metal parts of your bike before assembling and lubricating them. You should never use WD40 on anything other parts of your bike, especially the brake pads. Applying any kind of oil on your bike's brake pads or the rotors will lead to contamination.
