It's important to note rattling aggressively might spook younger, less mature, bucks that are concerned with getting whooped by a more mature deer. Try rattling for 30 seconds to a minute per sequence every hour during peak rut.
Suitably, why do hunters wear camouflage if deer are color blind?
The reason for this is that humans and animals see differently. It's common knowledge that deer “see in black and white”. This isn't quite true, deer see “dichromatic”, being able to see more blue, and hardly any red. This helps them have better vision in the dark.
Again, will rattling scare does away? If your grunts are to loud when they are close or are just wrong(pitch, cadence, or as some calls just not right) then deer can spook. Also some deer when they have a lot of hunting pressure learn that grunt calls and rattling can mean a hunter's in the area and they will just boogy.
Therefore, what is antler rattling?
Pre-Rut Rattling -You are trying to simulate two bucks fighting, so be aggressive. Your rattling should have loud and intense antler clashing and rattling sound, followed by some antler tickling, then intense clashing and rattling again.
Should you grunt while rattling?
Rattle Near Does Bucks hang around those areas a lot, especially late in the pre-rut. When you rattle or grunt near does you increase the odds of a buck hearing your calls and coming in for a peek.

The optimal time for using rattling as a deer call is at the end of pre-rut and up to the peak breeding period of the rut in your area. Once a mature whitetail pairs with a hot doe, he will stay with her for several days and deer calls like rattling will be unlikely to draw him away.
This suggests that the best time to rattle for any age buck may be in the morning, but older bucks may respond best in the evening. The researchers determined that the best time to rattle for mature bucks was during the post-rut.
But in almost every situation, they rely on sight above any other sense. That's why rattling doesn't particularly work to attract mule deer bucks, even in the active pre-rut phase. And it's why calling--grunting, snorting, bleating--isn't a reliable way to call mule deer, even when you find them in heavy cover.
As would be expected, this study demonstrates that rattling does not always work. More importantly, it demonstrates that rattling works better than most hunters realize. If you rattle in the right way at the right time, you definitely improve your chances for killing whitetail bucks.
Alsheimer, and the author's “Lunar Rut Theory” as an argument for knowing how the peak of the whitetail rut is regulated by the lunar cycle. In the book, Alsheimer says that the rut lasts 40 days, and the peak of the rut will always begin three days after the “Rutting Moon” and last for about 10 days.
While a balance is always best for a herd regardless of the time of year, it is not necessary for rattling to work well during early season since they are responding to be social with other bucks. So early season rattling can work even if the buck to doe ratio is skewed badly in favor of the does.
When deer begin moving out of their beds they sometimes communicate with light grunts or bleats. Using a deep buck grunt pre rut will usually scare away any does since they are beginning to be harassed by the bucks, but bucks will sometime come to see who is intruding.
Bucks often make fewer new scrapes per week, but concentrate more on specific scrapes (the traditional scrapes mentioned above) in the 1-2 weeks prior to peak breeding, and then, once peak breeding begins, they often scrape very little; 'cause they are too busy with does.
Thus, hunting right over scrapes is generally unproductive. A better strategy involves hunting a travel route between a bedding area and an area with active scrapes. There, you can intercept a buck as he heads to a scrape before shooting hours' end or catch him as he returns to his bedding area in the morning.
