Painting requires removal of all dirt and grease so power washing may be the best way to remove most of the stuff that collects on any tractor. The spray nozzle will also blast away any loose paint. The tractor will soon look a lot better, but there will still be dirt and loose paint.
At the least, does tractor paint need primer?
All areas that have been sanded to bare metal, need at least 2 light coats of primer. Let each coat of primer dry 24 hours. ... Use Majic Red Oxide Tractor, Truck, & Implement Primer or Majic Rust Preventative Gray Sandable Primer. Thin with Majic Reducer to spray up to 1-pint per gallon (8:1).
Therefore, can you paint over high build primer? In most cases, the filler primer or high-build primer is also a urethane product. ... Because it has the texture to fill pits and imperfections in the sheet metal, an unsanded primer coat would be too rough to paint over without further preparation, which includes a sealing primer.
Despite that, what's the best primer for bare metal?
What kind of paint do you use on heavy equipment?
What I'd suggest is epoxy primer and acrylic Urethane. I worked at an agricultural fertilizer/herbicide spraying outfit and that's what we used for ease and durability. At that time it was acrylic urethane but the old Imron but the epoxy primer is nice on this stuff. Especially on cast pieces that will need no sanding.

Any high-quality automotive primer will cover and hide the scratches. Pinholes are not so easy to fix. Pinholes are the tiny voids, bubbles, and pits caused by air that got mixed into the dry micro. ... Unfortunately, primer is very thick and does a horrible job of filling pinholes.
Good quality bonding primers will often state 'no sanding is necessary' and will stick to glossy surfaces like glass, tile, metal etc. ... The really good primers do cost a little more but are well worth it. If you use a good quality primer prior to painting with a reputable paint, sanding may not be necessary.
Start with the 320p dry, and if you find it clogs up the paper too easily and you get pinning on the paper (small clumps of sanded material on the paper that wont come off by simply wiping the paper on your overalls etc) then you can do it wet and it will be much easier to sand.
