A torn ACL requires rest, immobilization, and often surgery for repair. The Cruciate Care Knee Brace acts as a CCL brace or ACL brace for dogs and offers therapeutic support and stabilization before and after surgery. It is also useful in cases when surgery is not necessary or feasible.
At the very least, do braces help dogs with torn ACL?
So for dogs with a torn ACL, the best option for long-term stability and function ultimately is surgery. While a brace may seem attractive either as a short- or long-term solution, for the money they are of little value. You need to apply the brace every day and take it off for your pet.
Plus, will a knee brace help a torn ACL? Wearing an ACL brace can help prevent injury to the Anterior Cruciate Ligament or help support your knee after an ACL tear or injury. A brace specific to protecting your ACL reduces the amount of time that your ACL is in an “at-risk” position for tearing.
Right, can a dog recover from a torn ACL without surgery?
Brumett said dogs who have a cruciate ligament rupture that don't have surgery, rehab or bracing can develop some level of stability on their own in six to 12 months – but these dogs typically are not comfortable going on long walks, running or jumping. With a brace a dog can be back out playing in a just few weeks.
How can I help my dog with torn ACL?
In addition to the Ortho Dog dog ACL brace, there are a range of other conservative treatment modalities. Acupuncture, supplements (fish oil, turmeric, and glucosamine), swimming, and massage can also aid in your dog's recovery from a CCL tear.

CCL injuries in dogs are one of the most commonly seen orthopedic problems. Depending on the severity of the CCL injury, a dog's symptoms might range from having a hint of lameness to being unable to bear weight on the injured leg. A dog with a CCL injury may also have swelling on the inside of the knee.
When a cruciate ligament tears, the dog experiences sudden pain and often holds his leg up. The dog may put the leg down and start using the leg again within a day or so, but will continue to limp for several weeks.
For best results, you should put them on first thing in the morning and take them off right before you go to bed. They should NOT be worn overnight while sleeping. Your doctor or medical professional can also provide guidance on Graduated Compression Legwear and usage.
Some doctors are afraid that knee braces may actually increase the number of knee injuries in athletes. But many people who wear knee braces feel that they help. Knee braces are the least important part of preventing knee injuries or healing after an injury. Good strength and flexibility are much more important.
In the immediate post injury period I recommend several techniques to help these dogs feel better. First icing the knee 3-4 times per day for 10-15 minutes is helpful. You can make a very effective icepack using 2 parts water to 1 part rubbing alcohol in a Ziploc freezer bag.
The ACL cannot heal on its own because there is no blood supply to this ligament. Surgery is usually required for athletes because the ACL is needed in order to safely perform the sharp movements that are required in sports.
How does a dog injury their ACL or CCL? The most common cause of cruciate ligament rupture is excessive internal rotation of the tibia when the joint is partially flexed. This can be the result of trauma or running and planting the hind limbs while the momentum of the body continues to move forward.
