If you know how to raise and lower the bridge on a bass guitar, you can make slight adjustments to the action of your bass. The saddles on the bridge can be lowered or raised by turning the screws at the top with an Allen wrench. When you adjust the saddles, you lower and raise the string height (the action).
A good bass setup is all about compromise, and as a guitar technician, you always have to find the best balance between playability and the most amount of fret buzz that you're willing to tolerate. Some common action measurements on a bass guitar are around 5/64″ up to about 7/64″.
Why do fender precision bass pickups have two offset coils? ... The split pickup were off set to widen the tonal range for deep low bass to bright treble. Each string used a double pole to reduce the unwanted “beat” effect common in pickups with single magnets.
pickups matter they can make an awful bass sound ok and a great bass sound amazing. They are pretty important, yes. Especially if you consider the types of pickups: a pickup brand might sound bad, but a different type will sound, well, completely different. ... There's a reason why most metal bass players use dual coils.
A lot of sustain can be lost at the bridge saddles and nut if they're loosely fitted. Moving the pickup far back from the strings will help you sustain harmonics specifically too, but only so long as everything else is secure first. Neck stiffness can contribute to sustain and tone.
