Really, should an AXE be razor sharp? Answer- Your axe should be shaving sharp! ... All woodworking tools, including axes, should be sharp enough to shave with for effortless, efficient and enjoyable work. Most new axes require from an hour to a half a day of hand sharpening to put them into proper shape. A dull axe is less efficient and more tiring to use.
In no way, can you sharpen an AXE with a knife sharpener?
I find that axes can be a bit easier to sharpen, because you tend to bring the abrasive to the axe, where in knife sharpening you bring the knife to the abrasive. If the bit (another name for the edge) is nicked and damaged I suggest starting with the heavy duty sharpener or even a bastard's file.
How do you sharpen a dull AXE?
Sharpening the Axe. Sharpen the edge with a coarse whetstone. Apply honing oil or sewing machine oil to the extreme edge, then rub the tip of a coarse whetstone along it in a circular motion. Sharpen both sides alternately to move the burr from one side to the other, until it is nearly gone.

I would simply recommend sharpening your axe as soon as you notice that it is not performing as well as it should be. The more frequently you sharpen, the easier the sharpening will be, and most of the time you will only need a few stroke with the sharpening stone (steps 3 and 4) to make your blade sharp again.
Personally i do suggest to sharpen a splitting maul, as i believe it's an important thing to do to maintain its usability, but not to go crazy with it. Actually, if the edge on your maul is blunt, it will often times bounce off the wood you are trying to split.
He defines a hatchet as simply, "a small one-hand axe used for chopping." These are ideal for splitting small pieces of firewood and chopping small branches from trees. ... Axes, on the other hand, are made to be used with two hands to maximize striking power.
Standard splitting axes come with heads that weigh between three and six pounds; mauls, with sledgehammer-type heads, can weigh as much as eight pounds. For most people, the best axe for splitting wood will weigh between four and six pounds.
A waterstone (or whetstone) is essentially a rectangular block of stone used to sharpen and hone the edge of a knife – or any other sharp steel tool, really. All the experts I spoke to agreed that using a waterstone is the best way to keep your knife in top condition, though it does take a little getting used to.
Use sandpaper, applying even pressure and rubbing it from the handle part of the axehead to the blade. You can work it with finer and finer sandpaper until it gleams. Place your axe on a flat surface or clamp it in a vice, if you have one available.
