Forbye, how long is a dipole antenna? When determining how long to make each leg of a Dipole antenna, dividing the frequency in MHz into 468 will give the overall length. To find the half wave, divide that number by two. This will give you the length of each leg of the antenna.
Along, what is a HF antenna?
High frequency (HF) is the ITU designation for the range of radio frequency electromagnetic waves (radio waves) between 3 and 30 megahertz (MHz). It is also known as the decameter band or decameter wave as its wavelengths range from one to ten decameters (ten to one hundred meters).
A beam type of antenna at a height of 70 feet or more will provide greatly superior performance over the same antenna at 35 feet, all other factors being equal. A height of 120 feet or even higher will provide even more advantages for long-distance communications.

The best material to support its own weight is steel. You can use a large gauge (say, 14-12) of copper wire which will work. For short wires that won't bend, solid copper will work. If you are going to attach it to a support structure that won't flex, finer than 14 would work.
You can use speaker wire, but be aware that how you hang it and the type of antenna you build can lead to problems. If the wire includes a couple of steel strands in it you're in good shape for antennas. If it's only copper and you hang it by the ends (and pull them tight) you will lengthen the antenna over time!
So according to our rule-of-thumb, 2 people around 6 feet tall using a 5 watt handheld two-way radio, used on flat ground with no obstacles, will have a maximum range of approximately 6 miles.
